Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) law enforcement officers found an 87-year-old
woman who had been reported missing and suffering from dementia.
The woman had been missing from her home in Holly Lake Trailer
Park, in west Broward County, since Tuesday afternoon, and the
FWC officers had been called to assist the Pembroke Pines Police
Department in finding her.
Pembroke Pines police officers couldn’t locate
the woman after searching through the night. Because the
victim’s home is near the Everglades, the police department
called the FWC for assistance, whose law enforcement officers
have specialized training and equipment to search in remote and
wilderness areas.
On Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., FWC officer Lindsay
Bruening and reservist officer Paul Mercier found the woman
lying in tall grass, next to an unpaved road in a wooded area,
near NW 4th Court and Heritage Circle. Although the woman was
conscious, she was weak, dehydrated and appeared overheated.
“She was unaware of what was going on, but we
were very happy to see her,” Bruening said. “We gave her a
little water to drink, and she perked up.”
The officers called for an ambulance and poured
water over her to cool her down.
The woman was transported to Memorial Hospital
Pembroke and is expected to fully recover.
