A boating accident in the Amelia River claimed
the life of a Fernandina Beach man Thursday evening.
David C. Milliken, 41, was on a commercial
shrimp trawler off the 14th Street boat ramp preparing nets on
the port net boom, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators.
Milliken fell into the water and was unable to
reach the rescue ring thrown to him. The boat’s captain, Glen D.
Huls, 47, of Hilliard, dove into the water with the ring and
swam to Milliken who had been face down in the water for
approximately three minutes, according to FWC officials.
Huls and Joseph Jenkins Jr., 52, of Fernandina
Beach, were able to bring Milliken back onboard the trawler.
Huls performed CPR, but Milliken was unresponsive.
Emergency medical services personnel met the
vessel at the Amelia Shrimp Docks and pronounced Milliken dead
at the scene, FWC officials said.
Nassau County Sheriff’s Office personnel and
Nassau Fire and Rescue also responded to the accident.
The vessel, named Lady Suzy “Q,” is a 66-foot,
1976 St. Augustine trawler.
FWC is continuing the investigation into the
accident.
