During a new moon (the dark of the moon) or full moon, fish and wildlife activity tends to be maximized.
Periods of increased animal activity (not only fish are
influenced) last from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the moon’s relationship to the
sun. Minor Solunar periods occur during the rising and setting
times of the moon, and major periods are indicated during the two transits.
You can roughly calculate these maximum solunar times for yourself by adding six hours to
the rise and set times for the moon. If these occur within 30 minutes of a
sunrise or sunset the impact will be even greater. And maximum impact
occurs when these events coincide with a full or new moon. See
solunar theory for more details.
WATER-LEVEL DATA
One more factor that influences fishing especially in coastal regions is the status of the tide. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Web site let's you choose from a set of data points and get tide predictions for whenever you'd like. The US Geological Service provides similar inland water-level data as well as many other real-time results, such as surface and air temperature, wind-direction and velocity, recent rainfall, and stream-flow data that can help plan your fishing trips.
